Working in the fire service, you may think a new pain is from yesterday’s drill or that low energy is because of last night’s call or interrupted sleep. Often you’re right, but when subtle health changes persist, it’s time to make sure.
Here are three simple steps to help you determine if a subtle change is being caused by cancer:
Know Your Normal
How do you feel on your best days? Your work is demanding. Drills, training, early morning calls, and hard workouts are part of your routine. But even though your schedule is constantly changing and your sleep patterns are anything but typical, you still know when you’re feeling off. If you pay close attention and identify your normal, it’s easier to notice subtle, potentially important changes in your overall health.
Use The Two-Week Rule
Subtle health changes typically improve within two weeks. Subtle health changes that may be an early warning sign of cancer persist beyond two weeks. You may think it’s not a big deal, but if something that seems minor lasts two weeks or more, it’s time to talk to your doctor. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have cancer, but it’s still important to get it checked out.
Share With Your Doctor
You’re an essential part of your diagnosis team. The more information you share with your doctor, the better chance they have to make an accurate diagnosis. You know your body better than anyone, so if you are experiencing a subtle change in your health that just doesn’t seem to be going away, share the details with your doctor. Even if those details are embarrassing or don’t seem relevant. Trust your gut. If you’re concerned about the changes in your health, don’t let your concerns be dismissed.
