What’s the Big Deal About Actors Smoking in Movies?
December 8, 2009
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Dartmouth College were funded by the National Cancer Institute to find out. They studied almost 1300 Mexican-Americans teens over three years. It turns out that exposure to smoking scenes in movies was a stronger predictor of smoking experimentation than peer pressure. For those who saw 600 smoking scenes, compared to little or no exposure, the rate of experimentation jumped from 5% to 30%. Lung cancer rates have declined because fewer people smoke. Don't be part of this trend reversal.
